This course is aimed at people looking to move into a database professional role or whose job role is expanding to encompass database elements. The course describes fundamental database concepts including database types, database languages, and database designs.

Prerequisites

  • You should have basic computing knowledge.
  • Familiarity with relational database concepts is helpful but not essential.

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2019 Developer Edition: View installation guide. Other releases (i.e. SQL Server 2012/2014/2019) and editions (i.e. Express, Developer, Trial, Standard/Enterprise) can be used too.

  • Introduction to database Tables
  • Exploring a database with SQL Server Management Studio
  • Using the Select statement to extract information
  • Learning how to filter information
    • Making Comparisons
    • Using Logical Operators
    • Using In, Between and Like
  • SQL Server Data Types Explained
  • Working things out with SQL
    • Using basic mathematics (such adding, dividing, subtracting, multiplication)
    • Creating aggregate values (totals, averages, counting etc)
    • Formatting and using Dates
    • Manipulating text using SQL
  • Introduction to using multiple tables to extract data

Assessment

There is no formal assessment for this course and learners’ knowledge will be tested with informal activities throughout the session.
